What to do

Al-Fātiḥah is seven short verses. It must be recited in every rak‘ah of every prayer. Take your time; do not rush.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Transliteration

Bismi-llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Transliteration

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbi l-ʿālamīn

Meaning

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds.

الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Transliteration

Ar-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

Meaning

The Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ

Transliteration

Māliki yawmi d-dīn

Meaning

Sovereign of the Day of Judgement.

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

Transliteration

Iyyāka naʿbudu wa iyyāka nastaʿīn

Meaning

You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.

اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Transliteration

Ihdinā ṣ-ṣirāṭa l-mustaqīm

Meaning

Guide us to the straight path.

صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ

Transliteration

Ṣirāṭa lladhīna anʿamta ʿalayhim ghayri l-maghḍūbi ʿalayhim wa lā ḍ-ḍāllīn

Meaning

The path of those You have blessed — not of those who earned anger, nor of those who went astray.

Be careful of

Common mistakes

  • Reciting so fast the letters blur into each other.
  • Skipping ‘Āmīn’ at the end (say it quietly to yourself).
